AVA Playing Great But Just Misses The Win Over Mining Equipment
Drastic improvement but a little more neededUpdated Tuesday May 19, 2015 by Justin Markley.
The AVA Red continued their improvement as they played a re-match with the Mining Equipment team on Monday night at Dossey Field. While the first game between these two teams last week resulted in a 5 inning run rule, game two went down to the wire.
AVA was the home team and opened the game with Dylan Bowton on the bump. Dylan walked the first batter, Dawson Marcum, to start the inning. Dawson advanced to second on a balk and later stole third. Peter Oles followed with a hit to Lukas Markley at shortstop and reached on Markley’s error while driving in Mining Equipment’s first run. Oles stole second and was later driven in when Roland Madrid hit a double down the first base line. Madrid stole third and was driven in on a sacrifice fly by Andrew Morgan to Al Hurworth in centerfield to put the Mining Equipment team up 3-0 with only one out. And then AVA settled down. Dylan retired the next two batters at the plate.
Dylan finished his work on the hill for the night in the 2nd inning allowing a walk and another steal but getting a double play turned when he caught a pop fly and fired to Markley to beat the runner back to second base. He then got another fly ball caught by Al in centerfield.
Luke Ford relieved in the 3rd for AVA and gave a wonderful performance. He threw one pitch and assisted Chandler Jeep at first with the first out. He threw one more pitch and Markley and Jeep combined on the second out beating Madrid over to first. Luke then walked Morgan and got the third out with a three pitch strike out.
In the 4th Ford struck out the first two and then got a pop up to Calvin Chase behind the plate for the third out.
In the 5th Maddie Jo Robbins assisted Al at first with the first out on Ford’s first pitch. The second pitch resulted in a fly ball caught by Dylan in centerfield. The third pitch of the 5th inning went back to Luke for an easy throw over to Al at first to beat Madrid again.
In the 6th Morgan reached on Nat Prugh’s error at shortstop but was later put out when Nat and Maddie Jo combined on a fielder’s choice. Ford had also struck out a batter. Ford struck out the fourth batter he faced that inning as well for the third out.
In the seventh it was a strike out followed by a fly ball caught by Chandler in centerfield. Then Dylan at third robbed Oles of a hard line drive.
At the plate the Red needed just a little more help. Markley led off the first with his first of three strikeouts. Nat reached on a walk and was advanced to second when Luke hit a single. Jacob Schultz grounded out to first but advanced both runners leaving two in scoring position with two outs. Maddie Jo went down swinging after getting to 2-2. The Red were close to answering but couldn’t get it done.
Roland Madrid had his way with the Red retiring the next 6 straight in the 2nd and 3rd. But in the 4th Nat had seen enough. Nat opened the 4th with a hard shot nearly to the centerfield fence for a triple. Luke then hit a single to get AVA on the board. Jacob and Maddie Jo struck out while Luke stole second. Al then hit a single and drove in the second run bringing the score to 3-2.
In the 5th Dylan reached on an error and stole second base, but that was as close as AVA could get the rest of the night as the game ended after 7 innings with the score remaining 3-2.
So it was a drastic improvement over the first four games of the season, but AVA was just barely short. With the way in which they are improving we should expect some great baseball in the coming weeks!
