AVA Drops the Opener
AVA begins the season with a loss to the Bank of ColoradoUpdated Thursday May 14, 2015 by Justin Markley.
The Durango Little League Animas Valley Audiology Juniors baseball team kicked off their season against the Bank of Colorado team on Monday May 4th at 6pm at Dossey Field. AVA got stared with Lukas Markley trying to bunt for a hit but was thrown out by the pitcher. Maddie Jo Robbins followed with a strikeout swinging. Luke Ford singled to give AVA their first base runner but Al Hurworth followed by hitting into a fielder’s choice.
The second inning was also scoreless for the AVA team. Jacob Schultz singled but was forced out when Braden Lyons hit into a fielder’s choice. Dylan Bowton grounded out to the shortstop and Calvin Chase got rung up while watching the third strike.
In the second inning Nat Prugh led off with a single but Chandler Jeep, Carson Matz, and Lukas Markley all followed with strike outs.
The fourth inning was a little more fruitful for the AVA Red. Maddie Jo struck out to start, but Luke followed with a walk. Luke got around the bases and scored on defensive errors. Al hit a double but was tagged out at third on a very close play as he was stretching it into a triple. Jacob followed with a double, got to third on a passed ball and then scored as Braden got the first RBI of the season with a single. Dylan grounded out to the second baseman to end the inning.
The fifth inning was a 1-2-3 with Calvin hitting a line drive that was caught by the right fielder, Nat going down swinging, and Chandler popped up to the shortstop.
Carson led off the 6th with a walk and got around to score on a stolen base, and error, and a wild pitch. Lukas walked and got to second on a wild pitch. Lukas was caught leading off of second by the pitcher and tagged out sliding into third. Maddie struck out again followed by another walk for Luke and a strike out by Al to end the inning.
The 7th started with Jacob reaching on an error and then advancing when Braden walked. Dylan hit into a fielder’s choice and advanced Jacob to third. Calvin hit a single and got an RBI for driving Jacob across. Dylan then scored when Nat hit a single. The rally ended with Chandler and Carson both watching third strikes.
On the hill for AVA Braden started and threw three innings facing 14 batters. He gave up only 3 hits and issued only 1 walk and hit one batter. Braden recorded 4 K’s and gave up 4 runs, 3 earned. Jacob relieved initially facing 7 batters in 2/3 inning of work. Jacob gave up 2 earned runs on a hit and 4 walks. Jacob recorded 2 K’s. Al finished the pitching with 2 1/3 innings of work. Al faced 15 batters and recorded 1 K while hitting a batter but walking none. Al was on the hook for 5 earned runs after 8 hits.
In the field AVA committed 4 errors. Lukas, Al, Jacob, and Calvin each contributed. Luke had a couple of put outs and Al had 6. Braden and Dylan also got a put out each. Al and Nat had a couple of assists each while Calvin had 1 and Braden had 3. The Bank of Colorado stole 7 bases on the battery.
