AVA Looking Better But Suffers Another Loss
Better game for AVAUpdated Thursday May 14, 2015 by Justin Markley.
AVA showed much improvement on Wednesday night as they took on the Mining Equipment team at Dossey Field. However, the errors weren’t completely omitted, and Mining Equipment cruised to a 11-1 win in four and a half innings of play. As the teams and umpires agreed to continue play after the official game was in the books, AVA played another two innings showing continued improvement getting the deficit to just 12-3 at the end of the top of the seventh inning.
Al Hurworth threw four and two thirds innings from the bump for AVA giving up 7 hits and issuing 5 walks. He hit a couple of batters, and 10 of the 12 runs went down as earned. Al had 7 K’s including three consecutive in the 2nd inning. It was the third inning that hurt Al and the AVA team as there were 4 walks and an error along with two doubles and a single from Mining Equipment to get 6 runs across. Dylan Bowton appeared on the hill for the first time this season in relief work. Dylan faced 7 batters in one and a third inning of work giving up only 1 hit, no runs, walking 1, and getting 3 K’s.
At the plate for AVA Calvin Chase, Chandler Jeep, Lukas Markley, Nat Prugh, Maddie Jo Robbins, and Jacob Schultz all got hits. Maddie Jo was 2 for 3 with two singles. Lukas was 1 for 2 with a double. Jacob was 3 for 3 with a double. Braden Lyons had an RBI. Dylan, Lukas, and Carson Matz all earned a walk. Lukas, Maddie Jo, and Nat all touched the plate for AVA.
AVA had opportunity in the second. With runners on first and second and only one out Maddie Jo hit a nice fly ball to shallow centerfield. Coach Justin neglected to respect the speed of Dawson Marcum in centerfield and called for Jacob to come on to third without tagging. The result was a double play and the end of the inning. Carson Matz was next in the order and itching for an RBI opportunity. Later in the fourth inning with the score 8-1 and runners on first and second with two out Maddie Jo hit another nice shot to centerfield. This time Dawson bobbled the ball in the field allowing Jacob to make the turn home and try to beat the throw. Unfortunately for AVA, Mining Equipment’s Dawson and Gus Kidd, at the plate, were able to make the play to end the inning stopping the threat.
Next up for AVA will be a rematch with Mining Equipment on Monday the 18th at Dossey Field.
