Victory is RED!
AVA gets their first winUpdated Friday May 8, 2015 by Justin Markley.
The AVA Red bounced back on Thursday night in Bayfield getting their first win of the season against the Pagosa Extreme. The Extreme came ready to swing the bats, racking up 9 hits through 6 innings. But the Red defense was much improved behind master of the mound, Luke Ford. In 5 innings of work Luke yielded 3 runs with only 2 earned. Chandler Jeep and Maddie Jo Robbins relieved in the 6th to close it out. The final was 10-8.
Braden Lyons was dependable behind the plate allowing only 3 passed balls and 3 stolen bases. Although there were another 4 errors committed by the Red defense, the hustle, the energy, and the decisions showed great improvement.
At the plate, the Red were looking sharp. Although the 1st was scoreless for the Red, all four batters put the ball in play, with Luke getting a single. In the 2nd, once again all batters put the ball in play. Chandler got a single and a run while Maddie Jo reached on an error. In the 3rd the Red were scoreless again as they had their first strike out of the game, a walk by Luke, a pop up by Braden, and a nice fly ball by Jacob Schultz that was robbed in a miraculous play by the Extreme centerfielder. The 4th was a big inning for the Red. Al Hurworth started the action with a single while Nat Prugh followed up by reaching on an error that also scored Al. Chandler walked and stole second as Nat was thrown out wishing Coach Justin was clearer with the double steal sign. Maddie Jo hit the ball again and reached on another error that also scored Chandler. Maddie Jo stole second and then was driven in by Lukas Markley as he hit a soft liner to left field. Lukas stole second and was driven in by Dylan Bowton who crushed a ball deep to center legging out a triple. Luke and Braden hit a pop fly and a line drive that were both caught to end the big inning. The 5th started with a walk by Jacob and then Al hit into a fielder’s choice. Nat drove Al in with a single. Chandler grounded out and Maddie Jo popped out to end the inning. Lukas grounded out to start the 6th followed by Dylan striking out. Luke then hit a shot to center for a double to start some big, two out action. Braden walked followed by Jacob hitting a line drive and getting on base by error. A passed ball allowed Luke, Al hit another single driving in Braden. Nat hit another ground ball again reaching on an error and drove in Jacob while Al scored on an error. Chandler struck out to end the big inning.
It was pretty dark by the time they started the bottom of the 6th providing difficult conditions for Chandler and Maddie Jo as well as the rest of the defense. While they gave up 5 runs, they were able to close it out and get the win!
Next up are the Cortez Grasshoppers on Saturday morning at 9am at the La Plata County Fairgrounds.
